Frequently Asked Questions

What is Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR)?

ASR is a water management strategy where treated water is pumped underground to be stored. When the water is needed, it is pumped back to the surface where it is used. ASR is used because it provides a method of water storage which is not subject to evaporation nor requires disturbing the land surface.

Is it an exempt or non-exempt well?

An exempt well is a well that will be used solely for domestic use (such as irrigation of landscaped areas) or for providing water to livestock or poultry and produces less than 25,000 gallons per day. A non-exempt well is a well that produces more than 25,000 acre-ft per year or is used for commercial purposes. This type of well needs to be approved by the Board.
